How often have you blamed that second cup of coffee for making ceiling- staring a night habit?
Not to count those numerous times when your office chair was to blame for your neck and back issues, although you would swear on your last piece of chocolate cake that you used it right?
Well, I’ve been there, done that – and one too many times I must confess – before discovering the truth behind my sleepless nights and aching days… my favourite pillow was to blame!
Actually the way I’ve been using it to sleep, and let me explain this a little bit.
I am and always have been a side sleeper (that is preferably sleeping on one of my sides, with my one hand almost under my head, shoulder holding body, smushing cheek like kissing pillows etc.).
Yet, to my unpleasant surprise, my feather fluffy pillow, was not made to suit my sleeping habits… News was, I had to switch to a side sleeper’s pillow (OMG).
The best pillows for side sleepers, are made to embrace the body at the side sleeping position.
That is, they are much more tech improved than ordinary pillows. Many times made of memory foam materials, they usually are fluffy and soft enough to ease you to the dreamland, yet they allow for a perfect hold of your neck area to prevent tightness and stiffness.
Others are using water, beads, gel or buckwheat to secure your perfect sleep, and accord to your own preferences, i.e. whether you’ d like your pillow to hold its form all night long, or allowing it to transform and mould into different shapes following your sleeping positions.
Yet, side sleeping suggests that you may need a few more pillows for the rest of your body. There are occasions where you may feel a little support between the knees or thighs would do much good, cause your hips would really appreciate the stress release (!) or, maybe a back or stomach pillow would sound fantastic when your body is trying to support itself to the side for the night through.
Many of you would sympathise with these if you’ve been through pregnancy.
Remember those times when the belly would only feel right with three body pillows surrounding your head, knees and back!
Body pillows though, would work to their best only if purchased in their large size, so they could support as much part of your body as possible.
Sleeping pillows my friend is a big issue.
Discovering the best position is one thing, but discovering the pillow to support one’s habit is the whole point. And for me, a forever and ever side sleeper, a side sleeping pillow has worked magic.
Farewell to counting sheep, adieu to back pains and stiff necks. Life’s good!
